Mesothelioma is a form of cancer that is almost caused by some sort exposure to a fibrous amphibole; used for making fireproof articles; inhaling fibers can cause asbestosis or lung cancer. A technical definition would be that its a rare form of carcinoma of the mesothelium lining lungs or abdomen or heart; usually associated with exposure to asbestos dust. Mesothelioma, an unusual form of cancer, is a disease in which cancer (malignant) cells are found in the sac lining the chest (the pleura), the lining of the abdominal cavity (the peritoneum) or the lining around the heart (the pericardium).

 

Mesothelioma Cancer What happens is in this disease, malignant cells develop in the mesothelium which is nothing but a protective lining which covers most of the internal organs body. Its most common site is the pleura that can also be referred to as an outer lining of the lungs and chest cavity but it may also occur in the peritoneum (the lining of the abdominal cavity) or the pericardium (a sac that surrounds the heart).

Mesothelioma is a very rare form of disease which normally affects people who have been exposed to some sort of dust and fibers while on their jobs. That is the reason why there have some fibers limits put in the home or building construction. however, some older homes may still have a great deal of asbestos in the form of insulation. Mesothelioma can broadly be categorized into two categories:

1- Pleural mesothelioma (lung cancer)

2- Peritoneal mesothelioma (abdomen)

One things which is important to mention here is that the chance of recovery for a patient having mesothelioma really depends on size and location of the cancer also the age of the patient and how he responds to the treatment.

The options for getting treated from mesothelioma is:

- Radiation therapy,

- Chemotherapy,

- Surgery

- Photodynamic therapy.

It has also been found out that there is some evidence that provitamin A or beta-carotene may decrease the risk of mesothelioma.
